The A.E. Lowe Cup was first contested for in 1950/51 when the late President of the Footscray Protestant Churches Cricket Association, Mr Albert Lowe donated the cup for competition between New South Wales Churches Cricket Association and the Footscray Protestant Churches Cricket Association. It was from this that the competition grew and was contested for as an interstate carnival in Melbourne in the 1954/55 season. The teams participating in the series were, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, South Suburban (Vic) and Footscray Churches. This was won by Footscray Churches and is the only time that either Footscray Churches or Western Suburbs have won the cup. The name of Footscray Churches was changed to Western Suburbs United Churches Cricket Association with the amalgamation of the two Church Associations, namely Williamstown and Footscray in 1965/66.
